Front of House Engineer 2016-2020
Holy cow! That’s a big orchestra!
I started at Riverbend in the summer of 2016. I wasn’t aware of what a strong and vibrant art scene they had established, yet I had somehow landed on their shortlist of prospective engineers. I was offered a Sunday worship set as a working interview to see if I really knew my stuff, and how the team and I would work together. After a few weeks of filling the stage management and Monitor Engineer role, my chance to work at Front of House was up. That first Sunday at Front Of House happened to be September 11th, and Riverbend always chooses to honor those that have passed with a service featuring Austin Symphony Orchestra. Up to that moment in my audio career, I had only worked or mixed small rock bands of 16 audio channels or less. At that moment, I found myself in front of a top-of-the-line Soundcraft Vi6 Console with 60 inputs from the band, choir, and orchestra on stage. I pushed the faders up on downbeat, and the staff knew they had found their new Front of House Engineer. This is truly a defining moment in my career. I truly learned to love my craft, respect the music, and help the stage as much as possible. These large setups were not sparse, and I reveled in the opportunity to work with such talent.
